Tyler’s second 24-hour Blow-a-thon

Tyler’s second 24-hour Blow-a-thon is just three days away, and we invite you to join us in person or via our live feed (link to be posted on Wednesday). Last semester, we focused on opening our studios to some of the amazing artists in the Philadelphia community. This semester, we have divided the event into 4 distinct sections, each with a specific intent. Joining us will be internationally renowned artists Jack Wax (Professor and Chair of Glass at VCU) and several of his students from VCU; Stephen Paul Day and Sybille Peretti; Deborah Czeresko; Walter Zimmerman; Emilio Santini; and Hank Adams.

Noon on Wednesday March 16 Jack Wax (Professor and Chair of Glass at VCU) will give a lecture about his work in Room 121. All are welcome. Jack will then have studio visits with our graduate students.

6pm – Midnight: VCU v. Tyler: Experimental Glass Challenge
The Blow-a-thon begins at 6pm with VCU v. Tyler: Experimental Glass Challenge. The challenge (ala Iron Chef, or Sculpture Center’s Iron Artist of a few years ago) will be issued at 6pm sharp and finish at midnight. Each team will have two benches and full access to all of the glass facilities.

Midnight – 6am: Collaborations and Reunions
Reunions: During this six-hour time slot, we will welcome returning friends and artists Jess Amarnek (BFA 2011) with her team from Pittsburgh Glass Center, and Kristen Neville (BFA Tyler 2005; co-founder and member of Little Berlin) with her team. Collaborations: Invited artists Jude Tallichet (Sculpture), Beverly Fisher (Ceramics), Tim Rusterholz (Sculpture), and Julia Staples (Photography) will each work with a team of Tyler students to realize works in glass that would not otherwise be possible.

6am – noon: High Design Challenge
Four teams of Tyler students will compete in a High Design Challenge to solve a visual/conceptual/technical challenge resulting in a specific number of pieces. Awards will be given!

Noon – 6pm: AWESOME GUEST ARTIST LINEUP!
Six internationally renowned artists will be working simultaneously in our studios, blowing, casting, and flameworking glass. They will be assisted by Tyler students and alumni, and VCU students and alumni.
Hot Blowing: Jack Wax assisted by Megan Biddle; Stephen Paul Day; Deborah Czeresko; Walter Zimmerman
Hot Casting: Hank Adams
Flameworking: Emilio Santini

This event will be live-streamed and we will post the link here on Wednesday, March 16. More info to come.
